Botox® is an exciting anti-wrinkle treatment that is as close to magic as possible. In the year 2005, well over12 million people (female and male) have experienced the wonders of Botox. It is actually the nations #1 most popularly performed cosmetic procedure available. In 2002 the FDA approved, safe effective for cosmetic use, although it had been used for many different situations over the prior decades.

Therefore, Botox® is not a new product, and has been around for 20+ years. It is a muscle relaxant called botulinum toxin Type A can create a chemical demervation which temporarily prevents the muscle from moving thereby diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. It has been used to treat children with crossed-eyes, Post-stoke spasticity, cerebral palsy spasticity and even migraine headaches. About 10 years ago, it was accidentally found to be a powerful wrinkle smoother. It is not just available to movie stars and Hollywood elite but affordable to men and women who want to keep their youthful edge.

Botox® injections are almost painless and aim at relaxing the muscles of your face. The peak effect of the toxin occurs at 5 to 7 days after the injection, but improvement can be seen up to 10 to 14 days. Obviously, our facial muscles of expression have contracted for years. This can affect baseline muscle tone and the visibility of lines or wrinkles. These lines and wrinkles will develop in the skin above that muscle area, and will deepen as we age. Botox® will treat the muscle to prevent deepening of these wrinkles but the superficial "static" line of the wrinkle may not totally disappear. This "static" line can be softened with serial Microdermabrasion, customized chemical peels and other non-surgical means.

The usual sites Botox® is used to relax "static and dynamic lines" and wrinkles are the forehead, crows feet around the eyes, and the furrow between the eyebrows. There is no recovery time; you can have it done over lunch and return to work. Results usually last up to 4 months between touch-up sessions. With continued periodic use, results can last 6-8 months. There are no long-term side effects.

The beneficial effects can be enhanced by having your Botox® treatment done after a Cleansing Facial, Customized Chemical Peel, or Microdermabrasion as these treatments will brighten your skin and diminish fine lines. Any residual wrinkle of the skin that remains after giving the Botox® time to work, can be treated with one of the many facial fillers available. Usually, the wrinkle is much improved; therefore very little facial filler is needed if at all.

The most commonly treated areas are:

1. Frown or tension lines between the eyebrows
2. Horizontal worry lines across the forehead
3. Crow’s feet lines at the corner of both eyes
4. Wrinkles around the bridge of the nose
